Adding Shiplap and Sconces to Our TV Wall

Making Our Small 1970's Living Room Feel Bigger {Before & After}
Then, this past summer while we had contractors at hour house daily for a porch addition, I decided it was a good time to add some detail to this back living room wall. The way it was before made me feel like I was living in an apartment - so plain and boring!
So, to give the back wall some interest, I chose 8” wide tongue and groove boards for a more modern coastal look. Shiplap has certainly run its course along with the farmhouse era thanks to Joanna Gaines, but, I’m a firm believer in the staying-power of classic looks, and that would include shiplap when used sparingly and to support a particular aesthetic. In this case, that would be an updated retro ranch on the intracoastal canal a few miles from the beach. Besides, if you love something, who really cares if it’s “in style” at the moment? ;) The process was a little scary looking but it was all worth it. Below is an image of vertical lines drawn just to visualize what vertical shiplap would have looked like. In the end, I chose to go with horizontal boards.
Flanking the Frame TV are some pretty shaded brass sconces. I like things that put a spin on a classic look, like the modern shape of the sconce arm. Originally, the electrician forgot the dimensions of my sconces and drilled out round holes. This was a slight hold up, as a new board had to be cut and installed before they could proceed.
Yes, these lights required the help of an electrician to install since we also had him add a new switch with dimmer next to our existing back porch switch. If you can make any light dimmable, do it! I can see no reason why not to. They’re perfect for casting a soft ambiance for a night binging Netflix rom-coms or to add brightness to an otherwise dark corner of our room without having the harshness of the recessed lighting in our ceilings. To be fair, those also have dimmers, so it really allows a lot of flexibility in how I choose to light the room.
The slipcovers on my IKEA chairs are not standard. I purchased them with bright white covers that had classic slit skirts. The slipcovers pictured are actually custom made and I love them!

This is like a lifetime record for me, but I haven’t switched out the pillow covers on these chairs until the last couple of months and we’ve officially lived in our house for two whole years now!! Last, but certainly not least, I changed the art on my Frame TV to match the new pillow covers. We’re slowly creeping into spring in Northeast Florida, so I still want a subtle coastal feel that also worked for the end of winter. To me, that means using neutrals, like shades of gray.
