Jun 3 Pool Bathroom Addition Design

If you came here from the “Ranch Home Back Porch Addition” post, welcome! Now you know that this pool bath was part of that project. We thought the added cost of the outdoor bathroom was worth it since we didn’t want wet bodies traipsing through our house to the hall bathroom. There have been quite a few times that I went running up to the pool bath as soon as we docked our boat because it was just too cold to get in the water! :D I love the accessibility!

The pool bath is tucked under our recent back porch addition on the far edge of our house. We opted to continue the brick exterior of our 1970s ranch for a cohesive look. Most people cannot tell that the porch and bathroom have been added on and say it looks like it goes with the rest of the house. Mission accomplished! Here’s what it looked like while construction was underway:

The dimensions of the half bath are around 6’x6’. You can see the floor plan in this post. We didn’t feel the need to add a shower here because we wanted more covered porch space and already have a shower on the side of the house and one on the dock.

After the footprint was figured out, I finally got to focus on the interior. You can shop this space at the end of this post. Our backyard was built for having fun and I thought the pool bath should echo that! While I am not one to use color in decor in a very permanent way, I did still want some sort of design to make up for the lack of color. Tile was the perfect way to incorporate a fun pattern.

I went to my local tile store and found a few options that I narrowed it down to. This blue tile would be absolutely darling for an outdoor bathroom! I’ve seen it used in laundry rooms too and it looks really cute. I was tempted to use it, but…it’s blue.

For my neutral-loving self, I went with this black and gray diamond design that had weathered looking edges. I typically choose a fresh “clean” look, but I was too tempted by the fact that this tile would hide any sand and dirt that was tracked in. I was sure to choose a taupe colored grout that matched the edges of the tile. The last thing I wanted to deal with was keeping white grout clean.

Once tile was laid, our contractors tackled the plumbing and electric. We loved the wall-mounted faucets so much in our master bathroom that we wanted one out here, as well. I saw a photo on Pinterest that gave me some inspo for this bathroom and I had the contractors build a similar “floating” square shelf vanity.

Apparently, it wasn’t as easy as it looked to build, but they made sure it was sturdy at the end of the day! They stained it with the same color used on our pre-stained tongue and groove ceiling. I requested that bathroom have the porch ceiling exposed instead of a flat ceiling. It gives extra height to the space and adds character.

Let’s talk toilets! Because those are fun. ;) Okay, but seriously, THIS toilet is fun. I’m so glad I spent a little more to get a skirted toilet (one that is smooth around the base) because it’s so much easier to clean and it looks great! In case you’re wondering, no one can see in the bathroom window. Not even my husband. ;) The porch and bathroom are raised a couple of feet from the side of the house, so no window covering was necessary.

On the back wall, there’s an 8” wide nickel gap shiplap. It actually matches our TV wall in the living room because I had them add it there at the same time. It was also another way to tie in the new addition to the rest of the home. The base molding is just square and clean. I love it. Part of me regrets not getting all new baseboards throughout the interior when we renovated the house before moving in. At the time, it just seemed like an unnecessary added expense.

I think bathrooms are the perfect spaces for mixing metals. To keep things clean and modern, I used polished chrome and matte black fixtures.

I like keeping a few matching pool towels out here in case someone forgets to bring a towel out before jumping in the pool. They’ve come in handy a few times already. :)

Our landscaping provides ample opportunities for trimming fresh fronds and I take full advantage by keeping some greenery in each room.

I think I got a great deal on this pendant light! It has resort vibes and I’m here for it. The matte black base matches perfectly with this amazingly inexpensive mirror I got from IKEA! I waited a few months for it to restock and then jumped on it as soon as I got the restock alert via text! You can sign up for restock alerts on any out of stock product on their website. Similar mirrors run from $300-$500 on other “higher end” sites, like Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware. I’ll take my $59 IKEA mirror any day! ;) This mirror has now gone up a few dollars, but you can find it here.

Woven pendant light island style coastal modern

I originally planned to add some fun coastal or pool art above the toilet, but for now I’m just enjoying the simplicity of this space. Sometimes, less is more. The last thing I do need to add are the polished chrome towel hooks. It’s so nice to have this bathroom right by our pool. I’d highly recommend adding one if your budget allows for it!
