Our guest bathroom is going to be so FUN! I’m super excited about the tile, lighting, mirror…and, well, all of it! I hope you had a chance to read my previous posts about the new house design scheme and how it is going to be quite a bit different than our current decor. If you haven’t, here they are, below. ;)

The guest bathroom seemed like the perfect place to add a little fun and whimsy with some scalloped tiles (also commonly referred to as fish scale or mermaid tiles) while keeping with the new color scheme.

For years I pinned and saved photos of scalloped tiles as inspiration, so I couldn’t pass up the chance to incorporate them. There were quite a few tempting options to choose from, but ultimately, I went with this gorgeous hand painted tile in a muted black! What I love about the tile is that the edges are lighter, giving them a rich, multidimensional look. (Don’t mind the little broken tip - it was just a sample to get an idea of the color.)

I held the tile next to a true black, shiny tile so that you can see the difference in colors.

Because this bathroom doesn’t have a ton of natural light and is a smaller space, I chose to only tile the back wall of the shower with the dark fish scale tiles. The two sides of the shower are done in plain white subway tile with white grout. I wanted the sides to just blend in so that the fish scale tile could steal the show-er! See what I did there? ;)

Here is the black scalloped tile next to a plain white subway tile. Choosing a much cheaper subway tile for the side walls was also a way to lower costs for this guest bathroom.

Initially, I had planned on using brass fixtures in this bathroom because I think brass looks so great against darker colors. But, when I created a mood board with all of the pieces I had selected, it just didn’t look right to me. I think the warm brass sconces next to the rope mirror didn’t have enough contrast for my liking. For whatever reason, the shine of the chrome sconces really caught my eye. Compare the mood boards below and see what you think.

Mood Board #1

I wanted to see how I felt about the white fish scale tile, brass accents and school house style lights. ( I still love those lights by the way!)

Here are a couple shots of the white scalloped tile. Do you think I made the right choice?

Below is the mood board that incorporates the items I have actually purchased. I will be adding in a shower curtain and rod, but rather than using a single shower curtain, I’d like to use two curtain panels so that the scalloped tile can be seen when the two curtains are left open. I think it will look more polished that way.

I decided to lay the scalloped tile with the point facing upward because almost all of the inspiration photos I found online had the point facing downward and I wanted to do something a little different.

The vanity in the mood boards is not the same one that’ll go in this bathroom. The vanity from the previous home owners will actually work just fine, but I’ll be replacing the counter tops with a creamy marble-look quartz! Yes, that sentence does deserve an exclamation point! The vanity has been painted a dark muted black color, Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams.

I am really looking forward to seeing everything come together. I’ve already met with our fabricator and the vanity top has been cut and is ready to be placed on next week. The hardware arrived several weeks ago and I’m so looking forward to seeing it installed!

Coming soon…

Lately, the focus has been on our master bathroom because there are so many exciting things happening in there…and also some stressful things like the counter top being cut one inch too short! It will be replaced this week, so let’s hope everything is ready by move in day! We completely gutted that whole space (and by “we”, I mean our contractors) so I essentially got to work with a blank slate. Photos to come, so stay tuned!

Sending Sunshine,

Jessica
