Style With a Purpose - Starfish Project
When I first became aware of Starfish Project, I was intrigued by their beautiful and unique pieces of jewelry. But once I read their story and realized the purpose behind Starfish Project, I was moved by the amazing impact one company has had, and continues to have, on women and girls who have never truly experienced freedom of choice, or sometimes, even love.
Starfish Project is a nonprofit organization with a social enterprise that cares for women coming out of human trafficking and exploitation. They have empowered over 100 women so far and have served thousands through their Community Outreach Services.
Jenny McGee, CEO and Founder of Starfish Project recounts her experience saying, "I learned early on that these women - they are really no different than me. I quickly realized that they were just born in really bad circumstances. They either had parents who didn't care about them or were really desperate to take care of their families. They weren't valued because they were girls. But if I had been born in a different family and a different situation, I could be exactly like them." This really hit home for me. For so many of us, this type of upbringing isn't even fathomable. We have been so blessed to be born into families that love and care for us, and into countries that protect our rights as human beings.
Purchasing jewelry made by these women is a very practical way to reach out and help others who have been less fortunate. In fact, wearing the jewelry also makes for a great conversation starter. I can't tell you how many compliments I've received on these fabulous pieces! It's always a wonderful opportunity to tell the story behind the jewelry, in hopes that others will support the project, as well.

For example, I have this beautiful crystal and gold pendant necklaceand matching bracelet which is equal to the cost of one day of employment for an exploited woman. This directly paves the road to freedom, independence and an opportunity for creating a brand new life. Bonus - there's a gorgeous matching bracelet to pair with it! I love that each piece has a unique shape, so no two are the same!

One of my favorite color combos is with warm gold and cool shades of gray and white. Clearly, I like to decorate with it AND wear it. ;)
