I've gathered quite a few kinds of decorative and functional baskets over the years in a variation of shapes, sizes and colors. Rather than get rid of these dark brown baskets that didn't quite match the lighter grays and driftwood hues I wanted in my home, I just added some starfish to give them a more "beachy" feel. 

Actually, they go quite well with the tone of the wood floors and also my new-to-me bamboo lamps I found on Craigslist. Don't you think?

Adding starfish to any basket is super easy. All you need are:

• Starfish
• Basket
• Thin jute or string
• Scissors

You can use your finger to poke the string through the front side of the basket and weave it in between the basket material. There should be just enough space in a woven seagrass basket to poke it through without using any other tools. If your basket is more finely woven, a pair of tweezers or needle nose pliers might do the trick. The larger the basket weave, the easier it will be to fit your rope or string through. Don't mind the fluff that comes out of the twine/jute rope. Just sweep it up when you're done. ;)

If you tie the ends of the string tight enough on the inside of the basket, your starfish will stay put with just one strand supporting it. You'll hardly notice it if you use a natural color string/rope. 

I added one to each matching basket since they fit perfectly as a pair under my foyer console. 

Starfish add a nice touch just about anywhere! Get creative with them and you'll find they have many more uses in decor. :)
